Church & Community in Shilbottle by Colin Gough

This new book explores how through 900 years, the church community of St James, serving Shilbottle, Hazon, Whittle and Newton has cared for people and been shaped by events local and national, in church and state:

  • how the Norman land-owners built and endowed the church with early ministry provided by the canons of Alnwick Abbey
  • how Shilbottle had to adjust in times of Reformation and Commonwealth
  • how employment gradually moved from the land to the pits
  • what characters we’ve had as vicars, appointed by the monarch for 350 years
  • why we have the beautiful church building we do
  • how in past centuries and present, the church works with schools and all in promoting well-being in body, mind and spirit
