Launch of Canon Colin Gough’s Book ‘Church & Community in Shilbottle’ – Sunday 4th July

Canon Colin Gough

invites you to Sunday worship and

the launch of his book

‘Church & Community in Shilbottle’

on Sunday 4th July 10 am

in St James’ Church, Shilbottle.

For an extraordinary 900 years there has been a worshipping community gathered from among people who had to work very hard to survive, principally as labourers on the land or in its renowned coal mines and quarries. Throughout this time the Parish Church of St James has been here, to welcome the new-born, marry those in love and receive the dead. For many it has also provided the ‘yeast’ of a Christian faith that has transformed a hard-working community into a place where people have been happy to live and have valued and cared for one another. It has also helped shape and equip a few who have contributed extraordinary service in a much wider field of action.

Since the closing of the pits in the 1980s and with the building of new housing, Shilbottle and Newton now attract a more diverse population who can now learn more about our local heritage. This chronicle tells the story of the church’s life and influence in the parish community since its earliest days and sets the story against a backdrop of local history and wider political and ecclesiastical change.
